Lance Stroll Gives Two-Word Reply Amid F1 Retirement Rumours

Lance Stroll has yet again had to shut down speculation about his future in Formula 1. He recently issued a to-the-point two-word response to claims that he was close to forever walking away from the sport. The Aston Martin driver has faced repeated rumours of his long-term commitment to racing, and again had to dismiss the latest comments from former reserve driver Felipe Drugovich.

When questioned about the suggestion that he was close to quitting the grid before the 2024 season, Stroll simply answered: "Fake news."

Fans of Stroll are relieved by his reassurance that he is not going anywhere. Stroll's ongoing presence on the track means continued opportunities to support a Canadian driver at motorsport's pinnacle. Those who want deeper engagement can back their predictions on race weekends by using Canadian sportsbook sites to follow F1 events. Bettors benefit from competitive odds and safe platforms while betting on race results and qualifying performances. Canadian motorsports fans can stay involved with the sport and back homegrown talent like Stroll.

His response comes after Drugovich, who was Aston Martin's reserve and academy driver after winning the 2021 Formula 2 championship, claimed on the Na Ponta dos Dedos podcast that Canada's Stroll had seriously considered stepping aside. Drugovich suggested that he was positioned to take over the seat and that there were internal talks with the team regarding a possible driver change. "It was really very close to Lance himself, maybe not continuing in 2024," Drugovich said. He continued to explain that team plans appeared to move toward giving him a race seat before they fell through.

He was essentially suggesting that Stroll's future with Aston Martin is not as certain as public messaging suggests, and that he was ready to step in as driver. "I renewed with them for 2024 and 2025, and there were talks of me taking over in 2024, even with the team boss," he said. The team is owned by Lawrence Stroll, father of Lance Stroll, and it is uncertain whether Drugovich was referring to Stroll Sr. or CEO Andy Cowell. He added: "I said: 'I'm in the right place, at the right time, let's go.' It seemed the right time, and I think it went much closer than everyone thought it would."

The internet grabbed hold of these comments and speculated that Stroll was considering life beyond the seat. This is not the first time this narrative has followed him around. In 2023, he recovered from wrist surgery and struggled to match teammate Fernando Alonso's podium finishes. However, Stroll has continuously denied these rumours.

When asked about Drugovich's statements during the Brazilian Grand Prix weekend, the Canadian reaffirmed his commitment to the team and didn't elaborate beyond his "fake news" response.

Stroll is a contracted driver at Aston Martin, where he has driven since 2019 through the team's transition from Racing Point. His standing on the team is generally thought of as secure, given that his father leads the consortium behind the Aston Martin F1 project. The team has ambitious plans for future competitiveness, including new facilities and engine developments that will meet 2026 regulations.

Stroll is always involved in the rumour mill in some way. Earlier this season, similar talks emerged after a Brazilian commentator said during the Dutch Grand Prix broadcast that Stroll had asked to leave the time. At the time, Stroll brushed aside the comment, saying, "I had no plans on doing that. Not sure where that came from. I guess he needed something to say!"

Drugovich is currently driving in Formula E with Andretti. He recently acknowledged the situation, saying, "It is what it is, there's not much for me to cry about right now." He has accepted that although he was apparently close to a driver's seat, he remained sidelined by Aston Martin.
